Documentation
General documentation
Commonly used geographic codes Codes for standard Census geographic areas
Glossary of census geographic terms, English-French
Statistics Canada's 1996 census release schedules Dates of planned release of individual standard products.
Aggregated statistics Note re net undercoverage in the 1996 Census: "Data from the 1996 Census will not be revised for net undercoverage, since there is not enough information to accurately adjust census data at all geographical levels and for small subgroups of the population."

Search aggregate data tables Searchable database of all table titles in the Nation, Dimensions, Profile, and Basic summary tabulations series.
Population and dwelling counts The count of persons and dwellings only, at large and small levels of geography, including i.e. Canada, provinces and territories, census metropolitan areas (CMAs) and census agglomerations, census subdivisions, census tracts, enumeration areas, federal electoral districts, and full postal codes.
Nation series Tables containing one or more characteristics (e.g. age by sex), at very high levels of geography, i.e. Canada, provinces and territories, and for some tables, 25 census metropolitan areas (CMAs). (I.e. aggregate, multi-variate distributions.)
Dimensions series More detailed tables on special topics, e.g. ethnocultural and social characteristics, income and earnings, place of work and mode of transporation. These tables contain one or more characteristics (e.g. immigration status by income groups), at very high levels of geography, i.e. Canada, provinces and territories (i.e. aggregate, multi-variate distributions.). For some tables, data are available for census metropolitan areas (CMAs) or census divisions (CDs) and census subdivisions (CSDs).
Profile series Census characteristics, by large and small levels of geography, i.e. Canada, provinces and territories, census metropolitan areas (CMAs) and census agglomerations, census subdivisions, census tracts, enumeration areas, federal electoral districts, and forward sortation areas. (I.e. aggregate, univariate distributions.)
Basic summary tabulations Tables containing one or more characteristics (e.g. age by sex), by large and small levels of geography, i.e. Canada, provinces and territories, census metropolitan areas (CMAs) and census agglomerations, census subdivisions, census tracts, enumeration areas, federal electoral districts, and forward sortation areas. (I.e. aggregate, multivariate distributions.)
Microdata
Public use microdata files Microdata files, containing anonymized samples of long-form (2B) responses permitting users to do own analyses. Geographic identification of very high levels of geography (provinces and selected CMAs) only.
Geospatial files
Spatial data files Files which permit computer mapping of major levels of census geography, using computer mapping software.
Geographic reference files Files which permit linkeage of census geography to other geographic levels, e.g. 1991 census enumeration areas, postal codes, etc.
Thematic maps Spatial distribution of selected characteristics:

Other
Census of agriculture Aggregate statistics from the 1996 census of agriculture.
Beyond 20/20 Software required for use with most aggregate data products, including nation, dimensions, profile and basic summary tabulations series, as well as Census of Agriculture data.
