Notes: The boundary files are the Cartographic Boundary Files, 2001 Census published by Statistics Canada and distributed by DMTI. The original projection is Geographic, DATUM is NAD 83, and the co-ordinates are Latitude/Longitude.

Removal of Duplicates
In order to ensure that each CT was only one polygon, each CMA was dissolved before joining the attribute tables ("profiles") to the cartographic boundaries so that data were not duplicated for each separate polygon.

Creation of Profiles
The "profiles" are not exactly the same profiles as found in the original data released by Statistics Canada in Beyond 20/20 format:
1. Some of the Beyond 20/20 profiles had more than 256 fields and therefore could not to be transferred directly to dbase files (maximum of 256 fields). The original seven sets of variables were expanded to twelve. Also the Income variable list contained the median and average income more than once. Some of these duplicates were removed. Also the average housing value variable was moved to the Marital status and housing set. The Language list of variables has had some languages, for which there are a very small number of speakers, removed. This mainly affected native languages. The original table has to be consulted to get the numbers.

2. The field headings used in Beyond 20/20 allowed 256 characters, whereas dbase allows only 10. Consequently the field names had to be drastically truncated. Headings of 8 characters were created to allow for the automatic addition of such characters as "z" if the field is converted to z-scores in SPSS.

Note About Projection
Most of the work in developing thematic maps using CMA data is done by projecting the data to UTM, NAD 83 with the appropriate zone. Users should be aware that, when bringing any of these CMA shapefiles into ArcMap, the projection last used may automatically be adopted for the new data in that layer. Alternatively, the data may come with the original Geographic projection (in Lat/Long with decimal degree map units) and need to be given an appropriate projection should distance or area measurements be required. Printed maps will look better with the proper UTM Zone projected. An incorrect UTM zone will make the map look tilted and odd or may make the map disappear” entirely.
