Notes:

Re: HS to NAICS Concordance

We [Statistics Canada] do not produce such a concordance directly. We tell our clients that this concordance can be derived from one of our other products, the Customs Tariff x NAICS concordance. This is possible since the Customs Tariff codes are based upon the Harmonized System Codes (HS). The first six digits of the Customs Tariff code are equivalent to the HS code. Therefore, by simply truncating the CT code to 6 digits, this will give the HS to NAICS. This may create a file with duplicate entries so an extraction of unique records may be desirable.

The Customs Tariff file includes all codes since the year 1988, (over 40,000 records in total). The HS began in 1988 and underwent major revisions in 1996, 2002 and 2007. Therefore extracting Customs Tariff records truncated to 6-digits, for the appropriate time periods would give concordances for HS 1988, HS 1996, HS 2002 or HS 2007 to NAICS.
